The way you watch Thursday Night Football is going to change. With tonight's Chargers-Chiefs game in Kansas City, Jeff Bezos' retailing behemoth's streaming service, Amazon Prime, will start streaming Thursday night NFL games and will do so for the ensuing four months.
While viewers in local markets, such as tonight's Los Angeles and Kansas City, will be able to watch free-to-air television, those outside of those markets will need an Amazon Prime Video subscription ($8.99 per month alone; included in the overall Amazon Prime price of $14.99 per month or $139 for the year) and a streaming device set up to view on their television. Games will also be accessible on tablets and smartphones through the Prime Video app.
The NFL revealed more than 18 months ago that Amazon would be the sole provider of the majority Thursday night games as part of a mammoth, $13 billion contract that is valid through 2033. That means Amazon is shelling out nearly $67 million for each game in rights fees, at a cost of about $1 billion annually.
NFL fans can at least take advantage of one of Amazon's 30-day free Prime trials. If you're willing to watch that, you're willing to watch anything. That will get you through Washington-Chicago in the middle of October.
