MESSI
After scoring the 126th Champions League goal of his career on Wednesday night, Lionel Messi has once again made history.
The 35-year-old scored for Paris Saint-Germain against Maccabi Haifa, moving him one goal closer to Cristiano Ronaldo's competition record of 140 goals, which Messi continues to hold.
The Argentine has, however, surpassed his old rival in one position after scoring in the Champions League against a record 39 different opponents.
Prior to then, Messi and Ronaldo had the same score of 38, with Karim Benzema of Real Madrid serving as their closest rival with a score of 34.
Prior to Wednesday night, Benzema and Messi shared another record, but now the former Barcelona player has also claimed it for himself.
The PSG forward is the first person to ever score in the Champions League in 18 straight seasons, surpassing both Benzema and Messi who each had 17 straight seasons of scoring.
Ronaldo is just slightly behind those two on 16, but this season, with Manchester United competing in the Europa League, he is certain to lose that streak.
Messi could surpass a few records that Ronaldo still holds, but work still has to be done.
The legendary Portuguese player has 187 Champions League appearances under his belt and 42 assists overall.
Iker Casillas has made more appearances (181) than Messi (158), who is behind.
He trails Ronaldo by five assists, who has 37.
